Characteristics of the Czech jokes
What is possible to say about jokes in this country in general is that however popular they are - they are mostly rather rude or rasistic. It is a characteristic feature of our society here that if something is forbidden (not much now), a lot of people like it and even exaggerate. A lot of jokes are told in pubs. Unfortunately in our pubs you will seldom hear a normal joke, I mean without rude words. However there are some about politicians, policemen, and about Popeye (not the sailor) which is a general, funny or cuddly term for an imaginary little boy here who is usually bright and cheeky, and also imaginary Mrs. teacher in connection with him. There are also jokes about a very popular puppet theatre pair – Hurvínek and Spejbl who are word covns. Father Spejbl a rather confused elderly man and his bright son Hurvínek can make laugh not only children and they have over 80 years long tradition in this country. Some jokes are also about marriage, women, blonde very often and husbands regarding usually cuckoldry. We also have jokes about the Jews. The jokes about the Jews, I must point out, are usually normal because they are old, from times when rude words were almost impossible to say in public. Nowadays noboby cares if there are some Jews in our society or not. If you watch a for example a square in a town here, you will very probably not recognize any, no matter how well or not they are dressed oh what the colour of their skin is. A lot of jokes are created immediately after a social or political event. Less jokes are about animals. The popularity of jokes and unability of telling them all led to making books of them. Having written that I feel jokes are a little mirror of a society. It may as well be a topic for a graduation work.
